1.
What is Wavefront?
Wavefront describes
the percentage of optical distortion in the eye. Each person's optical
distortion is unique. It includes their glasses prescription as well
as their more complex distortions, known as high order distortions.
The measurement and treatment of optical distortion is done with The
WavePrint System.
2.
What Wavefront optical distortions are present in an eye?
In general terms,
there are two types of optical distortions: low order and high order.
Low order distortions include short sightedness (myopia), farsightedness
(hyperopia), and astigmatism. There are a number of types of high order
distortions. These may be responsible for some of the vision and night
vision concerns that some patients have had after laser surgery. These
include ghosting ("double" vision), starbursts, and halos.
The measurement and treatment of optical distortion is done with The
WavePrint System.
3.
What is the WavePrint System?
The WavePrint System
includes the WavePrint Map, 3D Active Trak Eyetracker, and Variable
Spot Scanning (VSS). This system allows your surgeon to treat
your optical distortion by performing Wavefront guided laser treatment
according to your individual customized treatment plan.
4.
Is WavePrint a separate procedure?
WavePrint
may be used with traditional Lasik
or PRK procedures. WavePrint describes the measurement
of optical distortion and the software used to run the excimer laser.
There is no significant difference in how the actual Lasik or PRK procedure
is done, whether WavePrint or conventional software is used.
5.
Is WavePrint more beneficial for some people than others?
Variable Spot Scanning
(VSS), a component of The WavePrint System that allows for
a larger treatment area, offers your surgeon greater flexibility in
developing a more personalized laser vision procedure when pupil size
may be a consideration. In addition, research has shown that WavePrint
is particularly helpful when treating higher order distortions. This
is especially beneficial for patients with higher prescriptions and
larger pupils.
6.
What are the benefits of WavePrint ?
The benefits of
WavePrint guided laser vision correction include:
1. Higher chance of seeing 20/20 or 20/10 depending on your goals.
2. The ability to offer treatment to people with larger pupils.
3. Reduced frequency of night vision problems following treatment.
4. Clearer, crisper results compared to treatments performed without
WavePrint.
7.
What research has been done on WavePrint ?
The following is
a summary of clinical results and safety taken from VISX
data submitted for U.S. Food and Drug
Association (FDA) approval.
Summary of 6-month
results:
1. 96% of eyes had UCVA (uncorrected visual acuity) of 20/20 or better,
71% were 20/16 or better, and 22% were 20/12.5.
2. 47% had better post-op UCVA (uncorrected visual acuity) compared
to their pre-op BSCVA (best corrected visual acuity).
3. 94% of eyes were within ±0.50 D of the intended correction.
Safety:
1. 96 % of eyes had UCVS (uncorrected visual acuity or 20/20 or better.
71% were one line better than 20/20 (20/16). 22% were 2 lines better
than 20/20 (20/12.5)
2. 87% were very satisfied with their night vision after surgery, compared
to 69% before surgery. 6% were somewhat or very dissatisfied after surgery
compared to 22% before surgery.
3. 88% never or rarely had halos after surgery compared to 76% before
surgery.
4. No eyes in this initial group lost more than 3 LETTERS of BSCVA.
8.
How much does Wavefront cost?
The final cost of
laser vision correction depends on your prescription, the type of procedure
and whether your pre- and post-operative care is provided by Image Plus.
Following your complementary personal assessment, we will provide you
with a final estimate.
9.Can
I get the same results from a regular LASIK procedure if I choose not
to have WavePrint ?
For patients with
certain prescriptions, the likelihood of seeing 20/20 is essentially
the same for WavePrint and conventional treatments. For appropriate
patients with higher prescriptions, the likelihood of seeing 20/20 is
higher with WavePrint. For all appropriate patients, the WavePrint
treatments give a higher likelihood of seeing better than 20/20, decrease
the likelihood of losing vision, and improve the likelihood of the same
or better night vision.
10.How
should I decide whether or not to choose
WavePrint ?
The first step
is to contact
IMAGE PLUS, your custom Wavefront centre, to schedule
a complementary personal vision assessment to determine if you are an
appropriate candidate for laser vision correction and WavePrint.
After considering the benefits
of WavePrint and discussing your options with your
surgeon, you will be in much better position to decide if custom WavePrint
guided Lasik is right for you.
